Answers:

1.  B.  Unless there is a genetic malformation, there are seven cervical vertebrae, thirteen thoracic bones, and seven lumbar vertebrae.  It is the number of bones in the tail that varies.

2.  A.  Coyotes and dogs have the same number of chromosomes so their offspring are fertile.  Offspring of animals with different chromosomes, such as a horse and a donkey, are sterile like the mule.

3.  C.  The bite force of these powerful dogs ranges between 150-350 pounds.  The Rottweiler consistently provide the most bite force.  The German Shepherd and the Pit bull were almost identical in bite force.

4.  False.  Color vision of dogs resembles human red-green color blindness.

5.  A.  The 63 day average is not dependent on the breed or size of dog.  The pregnancy termed ‘3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days’ describes the pig.  When the dog’s due date is approaching, the normal temperature of 100.5°-102° drops to below 100°.

6.  B.  The Caanan dog breed’s founder, Dr. Rudolphina Menzel trained the early dogs of this breed for mine detection work.  They have been used in search and rescue, as war sentries, guide dogs, trackers, and herders.  They are medium size dogs weighing between 40-55 pounds.

7.  C.  The tapetum lucidum is a layer of reflective tissue at the back of the eye that allows animals to see in dimmer light.  Humans and rats do not have tapetums, but most other mammals do.  “Leukocoria” describes the white shine seen with abnormalities such as cataracts. “Lenticular sclerosis” is the normal hardening of the lens that occurs in older animals which does not affect vision.

8.  B.  The dog brain is dominated by the olfactory cortex, unlike the human brain which is dominated by a large visual cortex.   A wet nose is essential in determining the direction of the air current containing a smell. The cooling of the skin by evaporation of moisture by air currents tells cold receptors in the nose the direction of the smell.

9.  B.  There are 42 adult teeth.  12 incisors, 4 canine teeth, 16 premolars, and 10 molars.  Puppies only have 28 baby teeth.

10. Groucho Marx.
