  Treatments

Is acupuncture safe?  Does it hurt?

Acupuncture is one of the safest therapies available because it balances the body's own system of healing. Side effects are rare, but occasionally an animal's condition may deteriorate briefly before improving. Insertion of the needles is virtually painless, however a moment of sensitivity may be experienced in tender areas. Once the needles are in place, most animals become relaxed and may even fall asleep during the treatment.

How many treatments are needed?

It depends upon the nature, severity and duration of diseases.  A single treatment may be enough for an acute condition.  A series of 3 to 10 treatments can resolve many chronic problems.  Some degenerative conditions may need monthly treatment overtime.

What is an acupuncture treatment like?

Each treatment is created and individualized to the patient. Approximately 5-15 needles are used and treatment length may vary from 5 to 30 minutes. A patient is typically treated 1 or 2 times a week for the first 2 weeks, then tapered as needed for maintenance of chronic conditions. A positive response may be observed after the first session, however it can take up to four treatments to determine if a patient will be receptive.  Each session may take 20 to 60 minutes.

Marli, developed a slipped disk and could not walk. The family  desperately sought a non-surgical procedure to help Marli because they couldn't take her for back surgery.  Faced with the prospect of putting her down,  the family sought Dr. Addleman's help.   By her second acupuncture treatment, Marli is able to walk around with some help. This is terrific news!  At the present time, Marli is on herbal medication and continues her acupuncture treatments for continued improvement.   Thanks to her family, Marli can once again enjoy visits to the lake.
